Some people say that authors write only write about things that they know
I believe that this is a false statement, yes many authors write about real things that happened to them but that is an autobiography, that's one genre. Then there are non-fiction but that is just subjects researched. But people like J.K. Rowling create whole worlds that they've never lived in and no one has ever thought about it.

Can people write about things they have never experienced, but know a lot about it?
Well yeah i believe that people can write about things they know about but haven't experienced. Like some kid could write about a party she's never been too but she knows a lot about it. These people would not be able to give a very good first account on something but they have the general gist of it, it does say they know a lot about it.
